Families who play together, stay healthy together

23rd March2009

Families who play golf together could stay healthy together, with a new pilot scheme at a lucky13 clubs aiming to boost the sporting fitness in Wales.

Welsh Golf

Golf is the perfect family sport for all ages to enjoy together as a family and Golf Development Wales are looking to use the Family Start Golfing Scheme to encourage greater group membership.

Sports Council for Wales research shows that if parents are involved in sport then more than half their children achieve the target of at least five hours of physical activity a week, while only just over a third of children from less sporty families reach those levels.

Welsh Assembly Government targets over the next 20 years are for those figures to increase to all primary school children and 90 per cent of secondary school children to participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity five times a week.

“We believe that attracting more family units to play golf means more people are likely to achieve the targets set out by the WAG - therefore creating a healthier Nation, as well as encouraging families to spend time together,” explained Golf Development Wales manager Hannah James .

“With this in mind, Golf Development Wales is piloting a new Family Start Golfing Scheme.

“It aims to attract more whole family units to learn and play golf together

Time constraints for families of today make it difficult for individuals to keep physically active as well as ensuring they spend quality time together as family.

“However Golf is unique where families can socialise in the comfort and safety of the club house as well as enabling families to participating together on an even playing field due to the unique  handicap system (allowing all abilities and ages to compete/ participate and have fun on equal ground).

“The scheme is being piloted in 13 clubs in Wales with the hope of increasing participation, promoting a healthy family lifestyles as well as increasing membership at golf clubs.”

The participating golf clubs are Clays, Abergele, North Wales, Anglesey, Welshpool, Llanwern, Tenby, Clyne, Summerhill, Glyn Abbey, Maesteg, Coed y Mwstwr and Ridgeway, covering all regions in Wales.

The scheme is a result of GDW expanding its initiatives following the success of the Start Women Golfing Scheme in 2008 where over 800 females took part, resulting in participating clubs gaining over 400 trial members.

Due to the work of Golf Development Wales the estimated number of annual beginner golf opportunities has also increased by 19,000 to 219,000 in 2008.

Sport Council for Wales surveys show increased participation in golf among children - an estimated extra 6,000 7-11 year-olds and a massive increase of 17,000 11-16 year-olds, with an overall total of around 75,000 children taking part in golf.

The clubs participating in this scheme will run a free fun family taster day for individuals to try the sport. Following the taster day the participants will be invited by the club to take part in group lessons funded by Golf Development Wales  (these will either be free of subsidised depending on numbers).

Trial membership packages will be offered so that families can then experience club membership over a limited period of time. Clubs will then offer full family membership packages. During this scheme families will be encouraged to attend club social and family events.

The Family within this scheme is defined as any two (or more) family members – aunties, uncles, cousins, mums, dads, grandparents, boyfriends and girlfriends.

For further information on how to get involved please visit the Golf Development Wales website  www.golfdevelopmentwales.org ,  under Beginner Schemes and then Family Schemes. As the dates of the taster days are arranged they will appear on the website along with the contact number of how to book.
