Lancashire's Kelly Tidy (pictured) was England's leading scorer on the first day of the French lady junior championship at St Cloud.

The 17-year-old from Royal Birkdale shot a two-over par 73 in the first round of strokeplay qualifying and is currently in ninth place.  Kelly, who represented Europe in last year's junior Ryder Cup, had three consecutive birdies in her round from the 14th.

Defending champion Rachel Jennings is two shots behind after opening  her campaign with a four-over 75, which included just one birdie. She is lying 25th.

After 36 holes of strokeplay the leading 32 players will qualify for the matchplay stages of the championship. That means the other four members of the English Women's Golf Association squad need to improve their positions in the second round to keep their title hopes alive.

75 Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton)
77 Hannah Barwood (Knowle)
