England's Holly Clyburn (pictured above, courtesy of leaderboardphotography.com) and Rachel Jennings posted a seven-under par betterball score of 65 to take the first round lead in the Spirit International Amateur Championship at Whispering Pines in Texas.

The two internationals each had four birdies during the round – doubling up only once, on the 17th – and they lead Colombia and the USA by a stroke.

Rachel (Izaak Walton) had three birdies on the front nine while Holly (Woodhall Spa) had two on each half.

Today they play alongside their American rivals, who are captained by Paula Creamer.

England did not fare so well in the opening round of the men's team event, in which they are defending champions. Matt Haines and Stiggy Hodgson share 15th place after they scored one-under 71.

It means that on the combined international leaderboard England – again, the defending champions - are currently eight-under par and lying sixth. The leaders are Chinese Taipai,  on 14-under. They also lead the men's event on nine-under.

The Spirit field contains the best 24 international teams who qualified through their final positions in the Eisenhower and Espirito Santo Trophies. Each team comprises two men and two women and is played on a four ball, better ball format over 72 holes.
