Three English golfers reach Spanish matchplay
27th February2009

Three English golfers, led by Gloucestershire's Sian James, have reached the matchplay stages of the Spanish women's championship at Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas on Gran Canaria.

She is joined in the knockout by Hertfordshire's Charlie Douglass and another Gloucestershire golfer, the English champion, Hannah Barwood.

Only two shots separated the three players at the end of the 36 holes of strokeplay qualifying for the 32 spots.

Sian, from Bristol and Clifton, swept up the leaderboard with a second round of level par 71 for a 148 total which lifted her from 37th place to 12th place. Now, she plays Rosanna Crepiat of France.

Her second round was only one shot off the best score of the day and her performance underlined her current good form. Sian, 20, has won both the qualifiers held so far for the British universities strokeplay championship.

Charlie, from Brocket Hall,  qualified in 29th place on 149 (70, 79) and meets Danielle McVeigh of Ireland. Hannah, from Knowle,  took 30th place in the draw on 150 (76, 74) and faces Rebecca Huber of Switzerland.

Meanwhile, Cambridgeshire's Sarah Attwood (Gog Magog) missed out after returning a second round 83 for a total of 158. Gloucestershire's Charlotte Ellis (Minchinhampton) retired.

There's also English interest in one of the Spanish qualifiers, Mandy Goyos Ball, whose mother, Angela, comes from Lancashire.

The Nations Cup was won by France A on 284. England were eighth.
