Youngsters look to maintain top record
8th April 2009

Wales 's young golfers will be looking to maintain their excellent record in a four country tournament when it is held on home ground in West Wales next week.

The Under 16's Quadrangular matches will be held at the Machynys course in Llanelli, against Scotland , Ireland and the Netherlands from Wednesday.

Wales won the event when it was first held in Scotland two years ago and were only denied last year by a 40 foot putt on the last green in Royal Dublin, instead they finished second to Ireland by one point.

However with the benefit of playing on a familiar course with home support, hopes and expectations are high that they could return to the winners circle.

“This is a development match so it is a  great opportunity for the Under 16's to come through,” said Nigel Edwards , the Golf Union of Wales director of player development and coaching.

“We do pretty well at Under 16's level and we think they can maintain that this year because the attitude and commitment has been very good.

“We had a trial match, North v South, and everybody is into the right approach and ready to go for it – they are a committed bunch and there is a lot of competition for places.

“They have been through assessment days and skills tests, as well as monitoring their performance throughout the year.

“They are receiving quality information and feedback on their games and we're looking forward the team being rewarded with success next week at Machynys".

Wales team: Patrick Mullins, Ryan Davies, Jack Bush, Oliver Baker, Adam Tuft, James Moore, Zac Galliford, Edward Beardsley. Coach: John Peters. Team managers: Leighton Smith, Dai Davies.
