Dredge record falls to 16-year-old rising star
8th August 2010

Rising golf star Ollie Mottram has eclipsed a long-standing record held by top European tour player Bradley Dredge - at the age of 16.

The Dewstow junior took the Peterstone Lakes course by storm to post a seven under par total in the South Wales Boys' Stroke Play Championship. The new mark followed a course record equalling four under earlier in the day, that score held by Dredge.

The triumph was just the latest in a series of impressive performances over the last two years - he won seven championships, was Gwent player of the year in 2009 and took the South Wales Boys' Spring Medal at Llandrindod earlier this year - all before the recent triumph at Peterstone.

Mottram has already been to Turkey and Hungary as a member of the Wales Under 18's after first picking up a club at the age of nine, playing the last three holes at Dewstow with his father, Tony.

" I was much more into football then and it wasn't until I was 14 and got picked for the Wales regional squad that I thought I'd better start taking it a bit more seriously," he said.

Since then his game has soared to new heights and as captain of the Monmouthshire club's junior section he is now playing off scratch.

Dewstow club professional Steve Truman has seen and helped Ollie develop and thinks the sky is the limit for the modest youngster.

" His work ethic is fantastic. Whether he plays well or not the day before he is always back on the range the next day. He is not only a great role model for the other juniors at Dewstow but also an inspiration," said Truman..

" He has also had wonderful support from his mother and father, which is vital and something common to all the golfers who have made it to the top. I really think that he has the potential to go all the way."

Ollie is hoping to follow many of the current top British names including Paul Casey and Justin Rose by winning a college scholarship to the United States in two years' time.

And the eventual goal?  "I'd love to become a tour pro and, if not, a teaching professional," he says.
