Leinster defeat Ulster to retain Under 15 Interprovincial title
25th August 2011

Leinster retained their Under 15 Interprovincial title in thrilling fashion in a ding dong battle with Ulster in the final series of matches.

With only a half-point separating the two sides, who had scored two victories each on the first day's play, it was always likely to be a close affair and it lived up to its billing with Ulster scoring the first point through Neil McKinstry's 5/4 win over Ted Collins.

David Carey hit back for Leinster with a 4/3 win over James McVicker, but whereas Leinster had been in the ascendancy in the second match - between Marc Boucher and Ulster's Marc Norton - after the front nine, a dramatic turn happened on the back nine.

Boucher had a lead of six holes at the turn, but by the 17th hole that lead had been reduced to one, and it required the Carton House man, who won the Under 15 Open title on Wednesday, to hold his nerve, which he did - parring the last two holes to close out the match by the narrowest of margins.

With Cameron Mills' victory for Ulster on the 18th against Rowan Lester, that left the match poised at 2-2, with the final match swinging one way and another between Leinster's Caolan Kennedy and Ulster's Ryan Long.
Kennedy led by two after 10 but the match was tied as the players approached the 16th tee. Kennedy went one ahead there once more, but Long lived up to his name by hitting a screaming tee shot down the 17th to within 40 yards of the green.

However, he was disappointed with his pitch shot, finishing 20 feet from the hole, and when Kennedy made his regulation four the Ulster man knew he had to go for the putt, as a tied match would result in a Leinster win.
He ran the putt eight feet past the hole, and missed the one back,  meaning Kennedy was the victor by 2/1.

In the other match, Munster beat Connacht by four matches to one, with victories for Tommy O'Driscoll over the previously unstoppable David Brady, Jason Lynch over Charlie McMickan, Jamie Sugrue over Jonathan Doherty and Michael O'Connell over Ian Dunican offset by a defeat for Ronan Murphy against Peter Fleming.
