Captain's Charity Day Raises Almost £20,000
18th August 2011
Tandridge Golf Club, Oxted - August 2011

Jo Beslee and her team of 6 golfing ladies have organised 7 charity golf days for Prostate Cancer in the last few years at various clubs in Kent and Surrey . The £19,300 achieved at Tandridge took the total that they have raised to more than £100,000

Despite the dull weather leading up to the event, Summer finally arrived at Tandridge Golf Club at the end of July when 104 golfers - 26 teams of four - competed in Captain's Charity Day.

Many had arrived early to enjoy the bacon rolls and some, encouraged by the Captain, Chris Shirtcliffe, indulged in a full English breakfast with Champagne . With the customary guiding hand of Stanley the starter, the pace of play was good and everyone arrived back in the clubhouse for lunch in good time. As they finished, all those who had played commented on the wonderful state of the course. The presentation was indeed magnificent with the greens a joy to putt. Thanks are due to course manager Neil Baker and all of the greenkeeping staff for working so hard. With the weather being warm and sunny, there was no better place to be!

Joined by the organisers and other supporters, around 130 people enjoyed the famous, full Tandridge carvery, wonderfully prepared by Sarah and her excellent team. It was now time to retire to the lounge for the afternoon's fundraising auction and raffle. For this, Chris Evans, the Tandridge head professional, had done a marvellous job in extracting golfing attire and other related objets d'art from a variety of generous suppliers.

John Francome, the former champion jockey turned commentator, led the auction of gifts donated by supporters. Treasures included golf at Wentworth and Royal St Georges, tickets for the theatre as well as football at Arsenal and Liverpool, paintings, hotel weekends, use of a holiday villa in the Algarve, and signed photos of the recent majors' winners, Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke. With his wit and excellent powers of persuasion, more than £7,000 was raised. This included the proceeds from a portrait of one lady from Rochester & Cobham Golf Club who had enjoyed, during the morning's competition, a hole in one!

The whole day would have been impossible without the energy, enthusiasm and professionalism of the organisers. Jo Beslee and her team of fundraisers, very ably supported by the club's assistant secretary Jane Edwards and lady member Jocelyn Broughton, managed a smooth, seamless and relatively painless transfer of nearly £20,000 from the pockets of those attending to the coffers of the Urology Prostate Cancer charity! Peter Thompson, the leading clinician in the Urology department of Kings College Hospital , thanked everyone for their generosity and spoke of the challenges and the work being undertaken to beat this awful disease.

It was a most wonderful day, enjoyed by all who attended.
