Search for golfing talent in Cheshire
28th May 2012

Coaches and players who took part in last year's Cheshire County Academy programme

The search is on for the next generation of golfing talent in Cheshire.

Two free assessment days are to be held in the summer to find boys and girls suitable for a place on the Cheshire County Academy programme.

Successful players will receive 12 weeks expert coaching from PGA professionals at one of 11 centres across Cheshire.

The Academy serves as a stepping stone towards the full Cheshire county teams or helps provide a coaching framework for the future for players who show the potential and determination to improve their golf.

The assessment days are open to boys and girls between the ages of nine and 15, who do not need to be a member of a golf club or even have an official golf handicap.

They take place at

DeVere Mottram Hall Golf Club on June 17

DeVere Carden Park Golf Club on July 1

Further information is available at the website

The Academy is now in its third year, having helped more than 250 youngsters improve their golf.

It is run under the umbrella of the Cheshire County Golf Partnership.

The Academy centres are based at Astbury GC, DeVere Carden Park GC, Styal GC, Prestbury GC, The Tytherington GC, Eaton GC, De Vere Mottram Hall GC, Moreton Hills Driving Range, Drive Time Golf Centre (Warrington), Heswall GC and Warrington GC.

Cheshire CGP development officer Craig Thomas says: "This is an ideal opportunity for young golfers who want to improve their game to benefit from the expertise of Cheshire's PGA professionals on a specially-designed course that will give them the right skills and habits to enjoy their golf as they get older.

"For some players that might mean taking their golf to a higher level with the Cheshire county squads, but for others it can provide the right kind of guidance to develop their golfing game over the years ahead.

"The coaching does not just cover on course skills, but areas like nutrition, lifestyle management and physical training. The aim is to help young golfers be as good as they can."

The England Golf Partnership is a collaboration of the major stakeholders in golf, including England Golf - the organisation formed by the merger of The English Golf Union and The English Women's Golf Association - the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

In Cheshire the partnership is supported by the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs, the Cheshire County Ladies Golf Association and the Cheshire and North Wales PGA.
