Golf coaches enjoy golf coaching

Short game specialist Paul Affleck, who delivered a special coaching seminar to Northamptonshire's golf professionals.

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE'S teaching professionals have been enjoying lessons of their own.

PGA professionals from across the county have come together for two special sessions organised by the Northamptonshire County Golf Partnership.

Two of the country's best coaches - Paul Affleck and David Alred - have delivered advice, tips and ideas to more than 10 coaches.

Says David Davis, county development officer for the Northamptonshire CGP: "These sessions have been an invaluable part of the professionals' commitment to learn more about coaching and how they can improve their own methods.

"This in turn can only benefit golfers in the county and those looking to start playing the game - the better the coach, the more likely you are to learn the kind of skills that will allow you to enjoy golf to the maximum.

"Many of the coaches are also involved in the County Academy Programme, which means the young players taking part in this initiative will also reap the benefits."

Affleck is a former European Tour player who specialises in the short game, while Alred comes from a rugby background and specialises in performance coaching. He was Johnny Wilkinson's kicking and performance coach while in golf he helped Luke Donald to the world number one spot and is now working with three-times Major winner Padraig Harrington.

Adds David Davis: "Paul delivered a great workshop and covered all areas from chipping through to pitching and bunker play. Watching him chipping and pitching from off the putting green itself was very impressive as he didn't leave a mark, although I wouldn't recommend that club golfers try this themselves!"

The England Golf Partnership (EGP) brings together the amateur governing body, England Golf and the PGA, to grow the game with the support of the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

County Golf Partnerships, involving the county men's women's and professional organisations, are part of the EGP's Whole Sport Plan for golf and an integral part of its vision to make England the world's leading golf nation by 2020.

In Northamptonshire the partnership is supported by the Northamptonshire Union of Golf Clubs, Northamptonshire County Ladies' Golf Association, the Northamptonshire Professional Golfers Association and the Northamptonshire Millennium Trust.
