Latest News from Marlborough Golf Club
15th March 2012

Biggest news is Marlborough Golf Club Professional Simon Amor and his son Ben win WEST of ENGLAND FOURSOMES for the second time in a row. I have included a transcript of our in house magazine report. The attached photo shows Simon (right), Ben (left) and Wiltshire Golf secretary Dave Lewis (also a Marlborough member) centre. Regret quality is not great. If any other details required please let me know.

Wow! Simon and Ben Do It Again!

West of England Title Retained by Father and Son Pairing "It's the first time it's been done in the 61-year history of the championship" said Simon Amor with a smile referring to his and son Ben's triumph for the second year running in the West of England Foursomes at Burnham and Berrow championship links.

Their successful defence of the prestigious title they won last year was indeed a unique achievement. Playing off scratch and one, they cruised to a 5 and 4 victory in the 36-hole final.

"Our opponents were Rob Stephens and Nick Bale from Minchinhampton playing off three and five. We were four down after five holes in the morning" recalled Simon "but we managed to recover and went in two up after the first 18 holes. Lunch certainly tasted better after that!" The afternoon round was pretty much one-way traffic and the pair found themselves seven up with seven to play. "I missed a putt and then hit a bad drive" confessed Simon "but Ben was playing very solid golf. We just needed a half and the end came on the 14th green." Having tried many times to win the title, Simon was delighted to succeed last year for the first time, especially as he was partnering Ben who at 15 had just been selected for the South West England training squad.

To become the first pairing to successfully defend the title is truly remarkable.

The renowned foursomes competition features such names as Peter Alliss and Brian Barnes among it's past holders, so the Amor duo can feel justly proud to appear prominently in such illustrious company.
