Counties Junior "play-off"
23rd August 2012

NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY GOLF PARTNERSHIP

A TEAM of promising young golfers from Northumberland will be battling for northern bragging rights next month.

The players - who have all been competing on the Northumberland County Golf Partnership's Junior Tour - will now defend the county's honour against teams from Cumbria and Durham.

The grand final of the North East and Cumbria Junior Golf Tour takes place at Carus Green Golf Club, Kendal, on September 1.

Cumbria came out on top against players from the junior tours in Northumberland and Durham in last year's grand final at Ramside Hall.

The successful Northumberland players - between the ages of seven and 12 - competed in an Order of Merit based on four events at Ponteland GC, Alnmouth GC, Linden Hall GC and Hexham GC .

Cameron Fletcher-Smith (Burgham GC) topped the Category One (advanced boys) rankings while Niamh Lendrum (Parklands GC) was the leading player in the girls' equivalent.

Three players finished on the same points at the head of the Boys Beginners (7-10) category - Aiden Layug (Morpeth GC), Matthew Grant (unattached) and Thomas Middleton (Parklands GC) - while Bertie Hinson (Rothbury GC) led the 10-12 age group. In the girls beginners' competition Emily Forman (Newbiggin GC) led the qualifiers.

The Northumberland squad for the grand final is:

Cameron Fletcher-Smith (Burgham GC), Owen Thomas (Ponteland GC), James Potts (Prudhoe GC), Niamh Lendrum (Parklands GC), Morgan Bulman (Tynemouth GC), Aiden Layug (Morpeth GC), Matthew Grant (unattached), Thomas Middleton (Parklands GC), Gabriel Rodda (Ponteland GC), Ben Sweet (Morpeth GC), Bertie Hinson (Rothbury GC), Finlay Laverick (Stocksfield GC), Dylan Povey (Westerhope GC), Emily Forman (Newbiggin GC), Jessica Mohon (Tynemouth GC) and Sarah Fay (Morpeth GC).

Ryan Jensen, county development officer for the Northumberland CGP, says: " We would like to thank all of the fantastic volunteers, staff and golf clubs for their continued support in making this another successful Junior Golf Tour.

"This year, as always, the standard has been fantastic and we hope the players have both enjoyed and benefitted from the experience."

The North East and Cumbria Junior Golf Tour is sponsored by Cleveland Golf and Srixon.

The England Golf Partnership is a collaboration of a number of stakeholders in the sport including England Golf - the organisation formed by the merger of The English Golf Union and The English Women's Golf Association - the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

In Northumberland the county partnership is supported by the Northumberland Union of Golf Clubs, the Northumberland Ladies County Golf Association, the Northumberland Junior Golfing Association and the Professional Golfers' Association.
