New drive to open up golf for newcomers
15th July 2012

LEICESTERSHIRE AND RUTLAND COUNTY GOLF PARTNERSHIP

GOLF clubs across Leicestershire and Rutland are backing a new drive to open up the sport to newcomers.

Special coaching programmes for would-be golfers are on offer to those looking to try the game or return to a sport they have played before.

The Leicestershire and Rutland County Golf Partnership has identified a number of clubs as special Get into Golf centres.

Says Jade Boggust, county development officer for the Leicestershire and Rutland County Golf Partnership: " Get into golf is a national campaign to inspire people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to take up the game.

"Taster and coaching sessions are available at our new Get into Golf centres across the county.

"Sessions will be free or at nominal cost, and equipment will be provided. All you need to do is book a session and turn up in comfortable clothing."

The Get into Golf centres include:

BIRSTALL GOLF CLUB (Leicester): Free adult beginner/non member sessions every Saturday 3-4pm.

Junior coaching is available every Saturday, 2-3pm, and every Monday, from 4pm.

CHARNWOOD DRIVING RANGE (Loughborough): Free ladies golf coaching every Thursday morning 10-11am. No dress code, just wear comfortable clothing. Coaching is free however ladies are asked to purchase range balls used (no more than £5).

Free junior coaching every Saturday morning, 10-11am or 11-12pm. Please book in advance. Coaching is free but juniors will need to purchase a basket of range balls (£5). All equipment provided.

BLACKTHORN WOOD GOLF CENTRE (Harborough): Open weekend with free coaching August 18/19, discounted range balls, trial memberships and opportunities for all to get into golf

HUMBERSTONE HEIGHTS (Leicester City): Open day on Sunday, August 12, with free coaching and opportunities to get into golf

The campaign in Leicestershire and Rutland is being replicated around the country in a major campaign to increase the number of people playing golf regularly and potentially moving on to future golf club membership.

The England Golf Partnership is a collaboration of the major stakeholders in golf, including England Golf - the organisation formed by the merger of The English Golf Union and The English Women's Golf Association - the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

In Leicestershire and Rutland, the county partnership is supported by the Leicestershire & Rutland Golf Union, the Leicestershire & Rutland Ladies County Golf Association, the Leicestershire & Rutland PGA and the Leicestershire and Rutland Sports Partnership.
