VOLUNTEERS in Northamptonshire have been honoured for their efforts in helping grow the game of golf.

Three awards were handed out at the Northamptonshire County Golf Partnership's annual golf day and forum in recognition of the many hours of work that go in to supporting the drive to help clubs in the county recruit and retain new golfers.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Peter Andrew of Embankment Golf Club, where he has been a member for more than 20 years.

In that time he has taken on a variety of roles to ensure the club, based in Wellingborough, operates smoothly and while his job title is Honorary Treasurer he has involved himself in all aspects of club life.

Club chairman John Jenkins explains: "Peter takes on far more duties than the post would normally include. He takes care of all our facilities ensuring we comply with H&S requirements, looks after all renewals for membership, naturally pays all the bills, ensures Honours Boards are updated annually and, in fact, this year he took on the project of completely refurbishing all of them.

"Peter is a staunch supporter of our Ladies Section and in 2010 presented a trophy for the Ladies Scratch Championship, so he will certainly go into the 'history' of our club."

Liz Mulliner received the Volunteer of the Year award for her work in developing the junior section at Northampton Golf Club, which now has 95 members, and in the successful application for GolfMark accreditation.

The Volunteer Coach of the year was awarded to Mary MacClaren to Wellingborough Golf Club.

The England Golf Partnership is a collaboration of a number of stakeholders in the sport including England Golf - the organisation formed by the merger of The English Golf Union and The English Women's Golf Association - the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

In Northamptonshire the partnership is supported by the Northamptonshire Union of Golf Clubs, Northamptonshire County Ladies' Golf Association, the Northamptonshire Professional Golfers Association and the Northamptonshire Millennium Trust.
