NUNEATON Golf Club has earned national recognition for its drive to help more people get into golf.

Officials at the club - in Golf Drive, Whitestone - are delighted to have been awarded GolfMark, a national seal of approval for junior and beginner friendly facilities which play an important role in the development of the game.

The club - first formed in 1906 - has long been an enthusiastic supporter of projects to find a new generation of golfers.

Now it intends to use the GolfMark achievement as a platform for introducing further schemes to help beginners take up a sport which offers both health and social benefits.

The club offers a wide range of practice facilities for those looking to improve their golfing skills, including a driving range, chipping area, putting green and bunker as well as coaching programmes run by PGA professional Craig Phillips.

The junior set-up at the club includes a welfare officer while the duty of care polices required to meet GolfMark criteria means Nuneaton is a place where parents can leave their child in the knowledge that the right coaching and protection procedures are in place.

The club enters a junior team into the South Warwickshire Junior League and holds a popular Junior Open.

The club also supported Midlands Golf Week by swapping the fairways for the shopping aisles when they staged a special 'Give golf a go' event at the Ropewalk shopping centre.

The club encouraged shoppers to hit real golf balls in a special inflatable driving net or on putting mats and offered free follow-up lessons and discounted coaching programmes.

A spokesperson for the club said : "Nuneaton Golf Club is delighted to have been awarded Golf Mark which demonstrates our commitment to progressing the club.

"We work towards encouraging, guiding and nurturing all comers to participate in the game and hope that they may join us and enhance our successful club.

"Club Professional Craig Phillips will be linking in with Julia Burton, county development officer for the Warwickshire Golf Partnership, to maximise the coaching opportunities available through England Golf."

The club also holds an annual historic Golf Week during which teams from Nuneaton, Atherstone and Hinckley play against each other in a friendly but competitive series of matches.

Says Julia Burton, county development officer for the Warwickshire CGP: "Nuneaton has shown a lot of commitment in attaining GolfMark, which acknowledges the work the club does in encouraging people into the sport.

"GolfMark accreditation gives Nuneaton the potential to build on their success and make it easy for people of all ages and abilities to take up golf."

GolfMark is a national scheme that incorporates ClubMark and recognises junior and beginner friendly golf facilities that focus on Coaching and Playing, Club Environment and Child Protection, and Duty of Care, all of which are extremely important to parents and children alike.

GolfMark is an initiative jointly provided by the EGU and EWGA via the England Golf Partnership's 'Whole Sport Plan' for golf and is an integral part of the England Golf Partnership's vision to 'Grow the Game'.

The England Golf Partnership is a collaboration of a number of stakeholders in the sport including England Golf - the new organisation formed by the merger of the English Golf Union and The English Women's Golf Association - the PGA, the Golf Foundation and Sport England.

In Warwickshire the partnership is supported by the Warwickshire Union of Golf Clubs, the Warwickshire County Ladies Golf Association and the Warwickshire PGA.
