Ladies enjoying a taste of golf in Staffordshire
7th December 2012

Ladies get ready to go out on the course at The Craythorne Golf Club in Staffordshire as part of the Get into golf campaign

WOULD-BE golfers at one Staffordshire club are enjoying special taster sessions - both on and off the course.

Ladies days at The Craythorne Golf Club include not only an introductory golf lesson with Head PGA professional John Cheetham but also the chance to mix with fellow newcomers over a meal and glass of wine.

"We find the ladies really enjoy the chance to not only give golf a go, but also to mix socially with the rest of the group," explains John. "It makes for a very relaxed day while the ladies are also learning about golf."

The format of the day includes a welcome coffee, two hours of coaching on the club's driving range and the chance to go out and experience playing a selection of holes on the course itself in a fun competition before enjoying something to eat and drink and a prize presentation.

The club - which is based in Craythorne Road, Rolleston-on-Dove - offers discounted follow-up coaching sessions for those who want to take their interest further and a route into potential golf club membership. One such session recently attracted 34 ladies, who are now enjoying the playing side of golf while making new friends.

Twelve months on from the first ladies day, the latest event included a nine-hole competition.

"In the space of 12 months the ladies have gone from not being able to play one hole to making new friends and going out on their own onto the course," adds John. "Some of the ladies now feel they are ready to take the next step and are asking about joining the club.

"For those starting out in golf, it is not about leaping straight into being a golf club member necessarily but taking the time to build up their knowledge and enjoyment of the game to the point where they feel confident to take the next step.

"The ladies days and follow up coaching allows them to do that in a relaxed atmosphere while getting to know both the sport and other people who are going through the same experience."

The club offers a wide range of coaching options, including five junior sessions a week and a fortnightly seniors roll-up.

A special one-off Christmas ladies coaching session - including fun competitions on the driving range with prizes - is being held on Tuesday, December 18 (7pm).

Further details of the coaching available for ladies can be found by contacting John Cheetham on 07709 320613 or by emailing

Says Sean Hammill, county development officer for the Staffordshire County Golf Partnership: "This kind of approach goes to show what a sociable and enjoyable sport golf can be - leading to a healthier lifestyle and the chance to make new friends with a shared interest."
