Fitzpatrick climbs as Europe claim team trophies
September 5, 2012

The Continent of Europe recorded a significant 12 ½ -11 ½ victory in the St Andrews Trophy at Portmarnock Golf Club near Dublin. Europe recorded its fifth win in the contest, but a first on Great Britain & Ireland soil. Europe had double reason to celebrate as the under-18 team recorded victory in the Jacques Leglise Trophy, winning 13 ½ - 10 ½.

Life is only getting better for reigning Boys Amateur Champion Matthew Fitzpatrick. Less than a month after recording one of the most emphatic victories in Boys Amateur Championship history, the English golfer finds himself ranked 12th on the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Fitzpatrick is one of two players this week to move into the world top 20, along with Matthew NeSmith of the United States. The Englishman moves 11 places on this week’s ranking to get within two spots of the world top 10.

The 18-year-old from Sheffield defeated Welshman Henry James 10&8 in the 36-hole final of the Boys Amateur, recording the fourth highest margin of victory since the championship began in 1921. He also won the Selborne Salver at the start of the season and finished third in the Carris Trophy.

NeSmith moves two places this week to world number 20. He justly takes his place among the world’s elite thanks to four wins this year. Victories in the Carolinas Georgia Junior, Azalea Invitational, Footjoy Boys Invitational and Rolex Tournament of Champions have helped the native of Augusta, Georgia, rocket up the ranking.

England’s Max Orrin makes a significant move into this week’s top 60. He moves 49 places to world number 53. Orrin, who made history this year by becoming the first English golfer to win the prestigious Thunderbird International Junior Championship, becomes the world’s second highest ranked English Amateur behind Fitzpatrick.
