Competition success for Warwickshire girls
25th October 2012

A TEAM of promising young golfers from Warwickshire finished top of the class in a special competition contested by five different counties.

The end of season tournament brought together players from the County Academy Programme in each of the participating areas.

The CAP has been established as part of the nationwide campaign to introduce more people to golf as well as creating a pathway for young players to follow to help them fulfil their full potential.

The County Academy is aimed at those who show promise, but who may not be members of clubs or even have a handicap. It gives them the opportunity to develop their skills at a series of coaching sessions run by PGA qualified professionals.

It is organised by the county golf partnership, a combination of the union, association and PGA in each of the five areas taking part in the tournament - Shropshire and Herefordshire; Staffordshire; Warwickshire; Leicestershire and Rutland; and Worcestershire.

The 18-hole medal competition involving 54 players was held at Robin Hood Golf Club in Warwickshire, with Warwickshire winning the girls event.

The team of Lucy Kelleher (Walmley GC, 15/16 age group), Danielle Heath (Ladbrook Park GC, 13/14 age group), Isobel Verbeet (Robin Hood GC, 11/12 age group) and Ella Donohoe (Robin Hood GC, 9/10 age group) returned a total of 221 to win by four shots over Worcestershire.

Julia Burton, county development officer for Warwickshire CGP, says: "Congratulations to the girls on winning - but all the players on the County Academy Programme have worked hard to develop their golfing skills with the help of the expert coaching team.

"Taking part in the CAP has given the players good habits for the future which will serve them well in a sport that they can play throughout their lifetime, bringing both health and social benefits."
