Abraham Trophy success for Jasmine

Jasmine Campbell

Norfolk's Jasmine Campbell claimed the title of England's most improved girl golfer with a three-shot win in the Abraham Trophy.

The 13-year-old from Royal Norwich scored net 70 at Tiverton Golf Club, Devon, finishing three clear of Hertfordshire's Rebecca Earl, and of her Norfolk colleague, Amelia Williamson.

“This means a lot,” said Jasmine (pictured left). “I didn't really expect it. I came to do my best and it turned into something more.”

The final, which was interrupted by lightning storms, was contested by 20 girls from all over the country, who qualified on the basis of handicap reduction.

Jasmine took up golf a couple of years ago, encouraged by her uncle, and this time last year was playing off her first handicap of 34. Since then she's tumbled to 15 and is hoping to get to single figures before the end of the season.

Her successes along the way have included winning her section in the Norfolk girls' handicap challenge and capturing the girls' title at the 2013 Norfolk schools' championship.

Her next challenge is the English U15 girls' championship, which starts tomorrow at Tiverton Golf Club. “It's the first time I've played in it and I'm very much looking forward to it,” said Jasmine. “It's going to be good experience.”
