Get into golf tees off on the Isle of Wight

29th April 2013
The Get into golf team at the Isle of Wight Masters event.

Golf fever spilled off the Augusta fairways and into the high street when Isle of Wight golf clubs ran a Get into golf Masters weekend in St Thomas Square, Newport.

The event, which coincided with the action in the US Masters, the first golf Major of the year, inspired passers-by and shoppers to try the game in the inflatable net and on the putting challenge.

A team of PGA coaches, club members and leading local amateurs were on hand to encourage them and to pass on information about coaching opportunities.

The event was organised by the Hampshire Golf Partnership, which works to grow the game in the county.  Terry Riddett, the Partnership's manager on the Isle of Wight, said: “We are really thrilled with the support we have received from golf clubs across the island.

“It has shown how keen we all are to get more people into the game. Ongoing coaching will be available throughout the summer for residents and visitors alike. We are dedicated to getting the message across that the Isle of Wight is a great place to get into golf and to play on our lovely courses.”

The event was supported by Freshwater Bay Golf Club, Newport Golf Club, Osborne Golf Club, Shanklin & Sandown Golf Club and Westridge Golf Club together with the Island Games golf team, the Isle of Wight Golf Union and the Isle of Wight Ladies Golf Association.
