The Issue of Male Only Golf Clubs

This vexed issue has reared it's head again with the report in the Scotsman - well tweeted and commented upon, mainly castigating clubs that adopt a "men only membership", even though they operate within the law.

Scotland's FIRST Minister Alex Salmondhas now said that he will not attend the Open Championship at Muirfield this summer as he underlined his opposition to male-only golf clubs.

Despite being a self-confessed golf fan, Mr Salmond said he would not be at the world's prestigious tournament when it is held at the famous East Lothian links next month.

On the subject of "men only clubs" -Viewed as a hot topic in the eyes of the press - Augusta inviting two prominent ladies to take up membership - and headlines such as "The only out and out all male venues on the Open rota are Muirfield, Royal Troon and Royal St George's"

The arguments and comments will continue to reverberate but we'll end by quoting that much respected golf writer Lewine Mair - writing in Global Post says "Since no-one will ever persuade the press to lay down their pens on this emotive subject - The downside to a resolution is that the media would be deprived of what is a firm favourite among contentious issues - to a man - and a woman we would miss it"
