RUGBY Golf Club supports Midlands Golf Week.

5th April 2013

WARWICKSHIRE COUNTY GOLF PARTNERSHIP

RUGBY Golf Club is taking to the road to support Midlands Golf Week.

Members from the club – based in Clifton Road – will be hosting a special Get into golf roadshow at the Clock Towers shopping centre on Tuesday, April 2.

Passers-by will be able to give golf a go by swinging real golf clubs and hitting balls in an inflatable net as part of the drive to encourage more people to take up the sport.

Rugby's assistant PGA professional Kelly Hanwell – winner of the Midlands Region PGA Assistant Professional of the Year for 2012 – will be in Clock Towers, in Market Mall, Rugby, from 9am-12noon.

Midlands Golf Week is held across eight counties from April 12-21.

More than 4,750 would-be golfers have seized the opportunity to give the sport a go during the first two years of the event.

Clubs from Warwickshire will be teaming up with those in Leicestershire, Rutland, Northamptonshire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Staffordshire to put golf at the heart of the local community.

Rugby Golf Club's roadshow – run in conjunction with the Warwickshire County Golf Partnership – will also offer details of how easy it is for people of all ages to follow up their interest in golf through discounted coaching and club membership offers.

On Thursday, April 18, the club is offering free one-hour coaching sessions between 2pm and 7pm with all equipment provided. Anyone taking part is advised to wear flat shoes.

To book a place contact Kelly Hanwell or Dave Quinn on 01788 575 134. It is an ideal opportunity to meet club members and see what Rugby GC has to offer. The clubhouse offers a warm welcome led by Yvonne James, 2012 Steward of the Year.

Half-price green fees are also available on Thursday, April 18, during Midlands Golf Week for those who have already tried golf with details from Kelly or Dave on 01788 575 134. The club will happily arrange for a member to guide any players around the course.

Says Immediate Past Lady Captain Hazel Oag: “We are delighted to be supporting Midlands Golf Week and to show how easy it is to take up a sport that offers a great way to keep fit, enjoy some healthy outdoor exercise and add a new circle for friends to your social life.

“People of all ages are welcome to visit us during Midlands Golf Week and see what a friendly club we are.”

The Clock Towers event is just one of a number of public roadshows being held across Warwickshire to promote Midlands Golf Week.

The inflatable net will also be available at Gracechurch shopping centre in Sutton Coldfield on April 6, Mell Square in Solihull on April 7 and April 9, Wyndley Leisure Centre in Sutton Coldfield on April 10 and The Ropewalk in Nuneaton on April 13.

Julia Burton, county development officer for the Warwickshire County Golf Partnership, says: "It is great to see clubs in Warwickshire being so proactive in taking golf out into the local community and encouraging more people to get involved.

“Thanks to the support of clubs across Warwickshire, Midlands Golf Week offers a wide variety of different ways to get involved whatever your age or ability.”

Midlands Golf Week is run under the umbrella of the county golf partnerships, which bring together the development officers, PGA professionals, county men's union and ladies association and the clubs themselves to develop a pathway into golf.

Get into golf is a national campaign to inspire new golfers run by the England Golf Partnership through its network of County Golf Partnerships, which work to grow the game.

Get into golf opportunities include free or low-cost beginner courses with PGA professionals. They are a fun and sociable way to start golf – and a great way to make new friends.
