JUNIOR GOLFERS ON THE WAY TO THE USA

Finalists for the Nike Golf sponsored Daily Telegraph / Center Parcs Junior Golf Championship 2001 announced

3 September 2001, Following a successful four months of competition the talented young golfers in the Daily Telegraph / Center Parcs Junior Golf Championship now know who will be taking part in the 36 hole strokeplay final to be held at the stunning Cloister Resort and Sea Island Golf Club, Georgia, USA.

Over 900 clubs registered a qualifying event this year, well up on last years figure and the standard of play has been consistently high, rain or shine. A total of 36,000+ girls and boys from throughout the UK took part in the tough qualifying rounds to win the chance to travel to Georgia and that number is now down to the final 21.

All 21 finalists will be kitted out from head to toe with Nike Golf apparel, golf bags, caps, club travel bags and footwear so that they really look the part as they experience the thrill of a major golf tournament. The leaderboard will also feature in the breaking news section of the Nike Golf website (http://nikegolf.nike.com/nikegolf) as if it were a Tour event.

The eventual winner will be crowned The Daily Telegraph / Center Parcs Junior Golf Champion, following in the footsteps of Justin Rose and Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart amongst others.

Topping the boys’ leader board are England’s Daniel Wardrop and Michael Nester both on a very impressive six-under par. Scotland’s Laura Walker who plays at Nairn Dunbar finished top of the girl’s leaderboard with an amazing four-under par – three strokes clear of Danielle Rosebury of Durham City Golf Club in second place.

Fredrik Stenberg, European Marketing Manager for Nike Golf commented, "The qualifying tournament has been an overwhelming success and we have seen some great golf being played. Nike Golf wishes the 21 finalists the very best of luck in Georgia and hope that they all enjoy the experience of playing in a major tournament whether they win or lose."
