CELEBRITIES SWAP FOOTBALL FOR GOLF
AT LA MANGA CLUB

 

Once again, P&O owned La Manga Club, has played host to some of the most famous names in Britain's footballing fraternity as they competed in the Eidos Footballers Golf Classic last week.

Now in its third year, the five day event took place on the resorts famed South Course in the beautiful La Manga sunshine. 29 teams of three golfers, joined 29 footballers to play four rounds of golf. After the competition, the event was rounded off with a prize-giving gala dinner at the five-star Hyatt Regency La Manga hotel.

The computer software company Eidos Interactive, creators of Tomb Raider star, Lara Croft, were the title sponsors of the Footballers' Golf Classic , for the first time this year.

The individual competition was won by ex-Ipswich player Russell Osman, whose name joins previous winners, Andi Gray (1997) and Bobby Campbell (1998) on the annual trophy. This year's runners up with Alan McNally, Gary Shaw and Trevor Brooking.

The event is organized by BEST, the Events and Sports Travel division of Barwell Leisure, Britain's leading tour operator to La Manga. The Footballers' Golf Classic is the brainchild of former QPR, Arsenal and Ireland player, Terry Mancini, Best's Sports Events Director.

"This year's event was great fun, not only to participate in, but also to organise. The support from Eidos and coverage from Sky Sports has enabled us to take it to a new level. The response from those taking part, footballers and members of the public alike, has been fantastic. Some people have already paid their deposits for next year," said Mancini.

Former Liverpool player and BBC soccer pundit, Mark Lawrenson, certainly enjoyed himself, "The "La Manga Gig" was a superb week, in which the organisation, hospitality and choice of personalities could not be faulted."

Among the starts also competing in the event were Liam Brady, Ray Clemence, Kenny Dalglish, Pat Jennings, Bruce Grobelaar, Andi Gray and Glenn Hoddle.

The 1,400 acre La Manga clubs is owned by Inmogolf, a wholly owned subsidiary of P&O and benefits from being part of this international organisation. The resort is located in the southeast corner of Spain on the Mediterranean coast and offers three championship golf courses in addition to facilities for over 30 other leisure pursuits.
