Community golf practice facility opens in Dolwyddelan
16th May 2009
Conwy County Borough Council has officially marked the opening of a community golf practice facility at Dolwyddelan, aimed at encouraging beginners to the game, thanks to an investment from Ryder Cup Wales to the tune of £19,709,
The development is one of over 40 schemes across Wales that has secured grant approval from the Ryder Cup Wales Legacy Fund. Following the successful Ryder Cup bid, the Welsh Assembly Government is committed to grassroots golf and has allocated £2 million in order to develop more public pay and play golf facilities for local communities.
The project at Dolwyddelan is aimed at developing and encouraging participation of the sport within the Conwy Valley as part of the long standing legacy of The Ryder Cup coming to Wales in 2010. Children and adults will be given the opportunity to practice their skills during organised activities and during their own leisure time at the facility, which boasts a dedicated short game area and putting green.
Rob Holt , Chief Executive of Ryder Cup Wales, said: Ryder Cup Wales is helping to build new facilities throughout Wales and attract new players to the game, and this facility at Dolwyddelan is one example of how we are doing just that . As the next European host nation, we are already seeing the golf development benefits and this fantastic new facility will encourage today's youngsters to play a game that can give them a lifetime of pleasure.
The facilities will raise opportunities within the rural areas of Conwy County Borough. They will provide children, young people and adults with the opportunity to undertake a new sport prior to committing themselves to a Golf Club. They will also give the opportunity for extra curricular activities within the schools and increase family participation within the grounds.
The chipping and practice area at Dolwyddelan is located adjacent to the primary school in the centre of the village and within the existing community park, where a number of sports facilities and pavilion already exist.
Nia Carrington, Conwy County Borough Council's Community Development and Support Officer, said: We are delighted to be working with partners to launch the new Ryder Cup Wales Legacy funded golf facility at Dolywddelan which will benefit local communities in Conwy and beyond. Facilities such as these are providing more opportunities for people across Wales to take part in golf and enable us to introduce youngsters and beginners to the sport in a fun and safe way.
The development aspect of the project sees the opportunity to work with key partners such as the Community, Menter Siabod, Golf Development Wales and local primary schools, which has seen the introduction of the Dragon Sport scheme, to develop structured evening sessions and holiday activities to promote the sport. In addition, a development link will to be made with the local Golf Club, Betws y Coed, which will act as an exit route for beginners.
