Henley golfers are ELGA Trust champions
The women of Henley Golf Club in Oxfordshire are the toast of the ELGA Trust, the charity for girls' golf, after winning a national fundraising competition.
The section beat more than 200 other clubs from all over the country to win the ELGA Trust Stableford Trophy and a laptop computer
The Trust is the charity of the English Women's Golf Association and women's sections were invited to fundraise at a summer stableford competition. They were asked to make a donation based on the points scored by the top ten players in their competition and nationwide they raised over £3700.
Henley's magnificent members amassed 393 points, three more than the runners-up, Portal Premier Golf Club of Cheshire.
The award was presented to Henley ladies' captain, Jane Atkin, at EWGA's annual meeting. This is a very worthwhile cause and we will continue to support the competition and hope many other clubs will also do so, she said.
She applauded the skills of the 10 players who notched up the wonderful score and added: We are absolutely thrilled by this. It's a national competition and it's very special for us to win it.
Jane was accompanied to the meeting by vice captain Lynne Carter and ladies' secretary Marie-Paule Norgrove, who was runner-up in the stableford with 43 points. The 2008 ladies' captain, Mary Jacobs, was also among the top 10 scorers.
The Trust soon to be re-named the EWGA Trust makes grants to help girl golfers with the cost of tuition, equipment and tournament expenses. Its income has fallen over recent years, forcing it to cut back on its awards and this competition is one initiative to boost funds.
Another is a Trust charity golf day, to be held on Friday, April 17 at Cambridge Meridian Golf Club where teams of three men or women - will play alongside an elite England amateur or an LET professional.
