The members of Tandridge Golf Club in Surrey were delighted when their club and course were included in the recent Golf Monthly course rankings, published in the December 2010 issue. For the first time, the magazine published a list of the 'Next 100' top courses in the UK & Ireland, in which the classic Harry Colt parkland course features alongside such prestigious names as Celtic Manor, Lindrick, the London Club and the Wisley. However, the club is not resting on its laurels and has very recently implemented a major upgrade to three of its holes as part of a course improvement programme.

Captains Drive-In

Golf Club AGMs, oddly enough, seem to come round quite regularly. once a year! These can be rather dry affairs, but they are usually followed by drinks and nibbles, and better still, the drive-in of the new captain(s). Tandridge Golf Club, in Surrey, had a more unusual experience of the latter just before Christmas.

Some two weeks after their AGM , the club finally followed the lead of Network Rail and conceded defeat to the snow. However, displaying an admirable if-you-can't-beat-them-join-them attitude, the members convened to watch new captains Chris Shirtcliffe and Melody Patten take part in this age-old ritual.

In Arctic conditions, and teeing off from just outside the far more inviting clubhouse, new Titleists were dispatched into the snow.

No doubt they were discovered some time after the thaw by members wondering how on earth anyone could lose a ball in such an obvious place!
