MARLBOROUGH SENIORS WIN QUADRILATERAL SHIELD The Quadrilateral Shield is played for annually and consists of four clubs, which were all inaugurated in 1888, that's Marlborough, New Forest, Salisbury South Wilts and Royal Winchester. Hosts this year were Marlborough and the match was played in atrocious conditions. Rain came in early on and never let up. Fortunately the greens resisted flooding most of the day but some later players were finding a certain amount of standing water when finishing the round. Everyone finished their round, not wishing to suffer the wrath of their captain if they sought the comfort of a nice shower and a pint in the club house early on, tempting as this was. Scores suffered in the difficult conditions and if you achieved Stableford Scores in the high twenties or low thirties you had done very well indeed. Marlborough prevailed at the close of play with 285 points, with ten scores counting out of each team of twelve. The other team scores were Salisbury South Wilts 273, Royal Winchester 272 and New Forest 228 points. At the team dinner a great time was had by one and all, much alcohol was consumed with an excellent meal, but despite that Captain John Sprules still managed to make his welcoming speech to all the teams, and thanked all for attending this annual event. Particular thanks went to the Marlborough Seniors Committee Members whose work behind the scenes meant a very successful and smooth running tournament. Other team captains responded with much ribbing directed towards the winning side and in particular the winning captain. John summed up by saying, "the Quad is a great event, with tremendous camaraderie, and I look forward to next year at Royal Winchester."
The winning Marlborough team is featured in the photo with the Quadrilateral Shield being held by Captain John Sprules. Front row L-R Graham Daws, Phil Smith, Dave Bidgood, Grant Talman, Barrie Reardon Smith, Gordon Bucket; Back row L-R, John Thomas, Graham Jefferies, Alan Pryor, Sean Swords and the illusive Dave Ferris is amongst the missing, having raced away at the end of the speeches like a Le Mans start and thereby missed the photo, bad luck "four under Ferris" as he is known within the club, (don't ask!).
