DERBY COLLEGE STUDENT WINS SOUTH WALES BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP Derby College student, Greg Tickell won the South Wales Boys Matchplay Championship at LLANDRINDOD WELLS GOLF CLUB on 17/18 July. Greg who plays at Hallamshire Golf Club on the outskirts of Sheffield is a member of the Performance Golf Academy programme which works in partnership with Derby College. Greg qualified for the match play by finishing in the top 16 in the South Wales Boys Stroke play championship. Greg played some great golf throughout the championship; in round 1 he defeated Joseph de Fue (Celtic Manor) 3&2 he then convincingly won his quarter and semi-final ties both by 6&5 margins against Max Davies (Fairwood Park) and John Luke Williams (Southerndown) to reach the final. In the final Greg beat Zach Gallifiord (Borth & Ynyslas) who led the qualifying stages in the stroke play by 4&2. Greg is striving to gain international honours with Wales as his Grandmother is Welsh and Greg's dad Geoff Tickell represented wales as an amateur and a professional. Geoff is currently club pro at Hallamshire Golf Club. Greg's performance in this event sees him gain 100 points in the Hugh James Order of Merit for Welsh Boys which moves him up to 4 th place. Performance Golf Academy programme director Nigel Furniss explained; "Great performance from Greg in his first win in a Boys Welsh Order of Merit event which has put his name in front of the Welsh selectors. We wish Greg all the best for the rest of this season in his campaign to play international golf."
