Independent Schools National Finals at Carnoustie Almost perfect weather at Carnoustie whilst the rest of the country were suffering downpours, hailstones and mini tornados. The Independent Schools National Finals were in Scotland at the famous Open venue for their Schools Matchplay Tournament Finals.
17 schools from all overthe UK qualified for the National Finals. Loretto and Milfield as last years winners and runners up received automatic entry into the finals. Around 120 schools throughout the UK take part in the initial knockout stages and the following won their area to make the finals this year. Birkdale, Campbell College, George Heriots, Haberdashers, High School Glasgow, Grammar School at Leeds, Robert Gordons, Rugby, St Pauls, Stowe, Taunton, Wellington, Whitgift, Woodbridge and Worksop. The format for the finals is strokeplay with 3 students per team and the best 2 scores to count on each day After the first days golf Wellington were in the lead by 2 shots with a score of 138 followed by Loretto, Worksop and Leeds on 140. Millfield and Birkdale were on 142. So all to play for on the second days play which took place on the Championship course. As the second days play got underway the students went out in reverse leader board order, there looked like there could be some good scores as many of the players were level or under par after the first 8/9 holes. For some Carnoustie showed its teeth in the finishing holes. In the end Wellington held their nerve to win by 4 shots over Loretto. Birkdale came in third with a total score of 290, whilst Millfield and Leeds came joint 4th with a score of 294. Wellington picked up their trophies and Galvin Green waterproofs
In the Individual event Alex Peters came in with a total of 138 to take the title
