A new drive to get more people playing golf in Surrey will tee off with an offbeat car challenge.
Visitors to the Merrist Wood Summer Show on Sunday, May 19, will be invited to test their skills by chipping balls into and through a car!
We've tried it out and it's great fun, said Richard Shaw, the county development officer for the Surrey Golf Partnership.
The car challenge will be just one feature of a golf zone, packed with free activities, which the Partnership will run at the show at Merrist Wood College at Worplesdon, Guildford. There will also be a three-hole mini-course, free tuition with PGA professionals in an inflatable net, and a putting green.
The golf zone will draw attention to the first South East Golf Week, from May 27 to June 2, when free tasters will be on offer at golf centres across Surrey, together with the offer of follow-on coaching opportunities with PGA professionals.
The week supports the national Get into golf campaign to encourage more people play the game and it is part of a regional festival of golf. It will follow the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth when interest in the game will be on a high.
Richard Shaw said: We are looking forward to welcoming hundreds of visitors as Merrist Wood and showing them that golf is a great game for everyone who enjoys friendship, fresh air and exercise.
It doesn't matter whether you've never played, or haven't touched a club since your schooldays or a long-ago holiday. This is the perfect time of year to start, so come along and see us and we'll soon get you hooked.
South East Golf Week activities will be listed at www.getintogolf.org For more information about the Surrey Golf Partnership visit www.surreygolfpartnership.com
