Dougherty Leads Club
to Victory
England international Nick Dougherty,
a protege of six-times major winner Nick Faldo, led Shaw Hill's
juniors to a convincing win in the northern semi-final of the Sunday
Telegraph's junior team championship at Dalmahoy.
Held on the Scottish club's par-68 West
Course, the former England boys' captain's handicap of +4 gave his
team a considerable advantage because the rules require one player
in each of the six-strong teams to play off scratch.
The 18-year-old's one-under-par 67 may
have been three shots over his handicap, but it was still the lowest
gross score of the day by four strokes.
The performance of the day, though, went
to Dougherty's 12-handicap team-mate Neil Ingham, who carded a five-over-par
73 for a net 61. This duo provided the cornerstone of the Yorkshire
club's overall score of 331, beating Tyneside club Whickham into
second place by five strokes.
Shaw Hill will now compete in the two-team
final at the five-star La Manga Club in southern Spain next month.
