CENTRAL ENGLAND OPEN MEN�S FOURSOMES

Whilst the Masters was being decided across the Atlantic the season unfolded in glorious weather conditions at Woodhall Spa Golf Club with the annual Central England Open Men�s Foursomes.

The event requires the winners to come through six rounds of Foursomes golf in three days over the toughest inland course in England, the Hotchkin, ranked 29^th in the world.

Phil Wardle (Garforth GC) and Andy King (Garforth GC) took the title beating Andrew Hession (Matlock GC) and Nigel Furniss (Woodhall Spa GC) in the final 6 and 4 in front of large and appreciative crowd. Wardle & King were too strong for Hession & Furniss covering 13 of the 14 holes played in level par in very testing conditions.� The wind had changed and freshened on Sunday morning, blowing from the East it turned the first hole 361 yards from a 1 iron and 9 iron on Saturday into a drive and three wood on Sunday morning.

In the Semi-Finals Hession and Furniss defeated Jon Gaunt (Woodhall Spa GC) and Mike Lee (Woodhall Spa GC) by 2 holes. After a scrappy start the match turned into an intriguing battle. All square through 16 holes, Lee holed a 30 footer for an unlikely par for, Furniss then followed him from 20 feet for a birdie three to take the advantage down the 18^th. Unfortunately Lee�s tee was lost to the right and Hession and Furniss were through to their 4^th Final in eleven years, having last one the title in 1990.

In the second Semi-Final Wardle and King defeated Robin Horseman (Waltham Windmill GC) and Geoff Hunter (Woodhall Spa) by 2 and 1 to reach their first final in four attempts.

�As always the event was played in a friendly but competitive manner with all the participants thorough enjoying the weekends activity, especially the glorious sunshine that was in evidence for most of the three days.
