TEENAGERS
GOING FOR GOLD
AT WOODHALL SPA
A total of seven
teenagers have won their way through the international final for
the English Golf Union gold medal to be played at Woodhall Spa on
19-20 August.
Two years ago
in the Gold Medal, Gary Boyd, from Northamptonshire then aged 11,
caused a sensation by emerging as champion off a handicap of 13.
This time there is also an 11-year old in the shape of Oliver Fisher,
from the West Essex club, who has a handicap of 12.
Jim Norrington
is 14 from the Purley Downs club in Surrey with a handicap of 13,
and another 14 year old is Tom Scoffin of Canwick Park Lincolnshire,
while 22-handicapper Chris Ellis is 15 from Woodpring in Bristol.
Two 16 year olds, Gareth Morgan (Pontefract and District) and Andrew
Lamb (Alnwick) play off 12 and 23 respectively, while the oldest
of the six is Wayne Taylor, from North Warwickshire whose handicap
of 17 matches his age.
The Gold Medal
is open to all male golfers of clubs affiliated to the EGU. Qualifying
rounds are played at club level with the leading players in each
county going forward to the final. The number of places per country
depends on the number of affiliated clubs the scale being one place
per 20 clubs.
This year 78
players will compete over the Bracken Course at Woodhall Spa on
Saturday 19 August with the final round of this 36-hole Stableford
competition on Sunday 20th.
