PAISLEY
AND YOUNG TO REPRESENT ENGLAND IN GREECE
Andrew Paisley
(Stocksfield) and Simon Young (Seascale) will gain first international
honours when they represent England in the annual 72-hole Greek
Amateur Championship at Corfu Golf Club on 28 September 1 October.
The third member
of the England team will be Ben Welch (Weymouth), who has played
for England Boys for the past two years. The team manager will be
Tony Moss from Lancashire, and England selector.
Paisley, 20,
is the new Northumberland county champion, while Young enjoyed a
successful run in this years English Amateur Championship at Royal
Lytham. The 22-year old reached the fourth round before bowing out
to Surreys David Ryles, who went on to the semi-finals, a run which
earned him his England debut in the Home Internationals.
Welch, 19, was
a member of the victorious England team that won the European Boys
Team Championships in Sweden last year, and the Boys Home international
in Wales. He is also the current Welsh Youth champion.
English golfers
have enjoyed reasonable success in the Greek Amateur including a
victory by John Wells from Yorkshire two years ago at Glyfada. There
is also a Nations Cup, which is decided over the first three rounds
with the best two cards counting.
