Friday
2nd of June 2000 is a day Bishop�s Stortford Golf Club will long
remember. The day was the culmination of weeks of work and effort
in a bid to help support the �Helen Rollason Cancer Care Centre
Appeal� and resulted in a cheque for �33,000
being given to TV Grandstand presenter Steve Rider, representing
the fund. With charitable status tax relief, the total
amount could finally exceed �40,000 !
Details:
1.
The fund was kick-started by a radio auction of
prizes, over the week-end of 20th, May.
Organised
with the help of Essex FM, Breeze, Mercury and Radio 1017, under
the banner �Cash for Causes� the auction offered:
A
box at Manchester United for six, with overnight accommodation,
(Donated
by Shell, this raised �5000 from a lottery winner)
Dinner
at the House of Commons for four,
A
luxury villa in Portugal for six for a week
A
deluxe, fully working child�s Mercedes Car
A
day out with the Channel 4 Racing Team
Tickets
for the ladies semi-final at Wimbledon
����� The auction raised �8000 !
2.
Through out May, a silent auction of items donated
by Members and organisations throughout the UK, especially from
over 40 other Golf Clubs who wished to help support the fund by
offering free rounds of golf as prizes.

Friday 2nd June the main fund raising event �The
Steve Rider Golf Classic�
Hosted
by Steve Rider and supported by Rob Bonnett, Stuart Storey and the
Channel 4 Racing Team led by Derek Thompson.
Run
and organised by Past Captain Paul Talbot-Smith and Committee Member
Mike Bailey, supported by Past Captains Rex Baldwin, Harry Whittle
and Ian Ritchie and an army of Member volunteers.

The
auction of items donated by Members and well-wishers throughout
the UK was run by Past Club Captain Rex Baldwin and included:

Villa in South Carolina (USA) for 1 week
A
house at St Andrews for 1 week
A
second Villa in Portugal for a week
Tickets
and Hotel accommodation for a match at Old Trafford (cricket)

Essex cricket bat
Souvenirs
from the Masters at Augusta (a bag of trivia put together by Steve
Rider which sold for �1000!)

This raised over� �10,000
The
Golf Competition was won by a Mike Standon, Kevin Horneigold, Andy
McNaughten and Captained by Mike Zelley. They promptly returned
their prizes of cased vintage wines, for auction, along with bottles
of Malt whisky donated my the Spellbrook Mercedes Team, raising
the total of bids by a further �1200
Steve
Rider won the nearest the pin prize on the 8th !
This
was a truly amazing event, full of fun, passion and commitment to
a cause close to the heart of all those who took part and especially
to the memory of such an outstanding person that was Helen Rollason.
