THE PALMER CUP 2000
15 & 16 AUGUST,
ROYAL LIVERPOOL GOLF CLUB, HOYLAKE
Graeme McDowell,
current Irish Closed Amateur Champion and the individual winner
of the World University Golf Championship held at Castlerock, Northern
Ireland last week, leads Great Britain and Ireland into the 4th
Palmer Cup. The only competition to bear Arnold Palmers name and
backed by the marketing giants IMG, the event is the University
equivalent of the Walker Cup, with the 8 best collegiate golfers
from Great Britain and Ireland facing their counterparts from the
USA.
The Royal Liverpool
Golf Club, Hoylake, is the setting for this years Palmer Cup. Host
of The 2000 Amateur Championship and ten Open Championships, including
the first international match in 1902. Royal Liverpool, renowned
for its great tradition with amateur golf, is delighted to be first
English Golf Club to stage this prestigious event
With the appointment
of Clive Brown, ex winning Walker Cup Captain as Team Manager, the
GB & I team are looking to improve on their 12-12 draw from
St Andrews in 1998.
Half of the
GB & I Team will fly in from the European Amateur this weekend
to participate in the match. McDowell, English Internationals Max
Harris and Jamie Elson and Welsh International Kyron Sullivan are
all competing in Austria. The rest of the team are an illustrious
group of golfers coming from all 4 corners of the UK. Walker Cup
player, Phil Rowe, and fellow England Internationals Mark Booker
and Simon Robinson with Joel Hendry, Scottish U21 Amateur Champion
making up the 8 man line up.
Robinson, currently
studying at the University of Houston, USA, will be playing on the
opposite side to his US team mate, Andy Sanders as they have both
been chosen to represent their respective countries in this competition.
The US are
hoping that Jonathan Byrd, will use his links knowledge from the
Walker Cup at Nairn and that Andy Miller, son of Johnny Miller (Open
winner 76) will enjoy Merseyside as much as his father did.
The opening
ceremony commences, 7pm on Monday the 14th August. Following
the Ryder Cup format, play starts Tuesday 15th at 9am.
