The 4^th Palmer Cup started today at Royal Liverpool Golf Club.� This annual match between the best 8 collegiate golfers of America and their equivalent from Great Britain and Ireland commenced with 4 morning fourball matches.

In match one the pairing of two England internationals Harris and Elson proved to be too strong for the US pairing of Sanders and Cassini.� After the turn the English duo were 5 under and finished winning 3 & 2.

In match two the US pairing of Andy Miller (son of Johnny Miller � The Open winner �76) and Lucas Glover got off to a tremendous start with 5 birdies on front nine.� Although the GB & I pairing of Mark Booker (Surrey University) and Joel Hendry (Scottish Youth Champion) didn�t hit a single bogie they eventually lost 5 & 3.

Match three saw the in-form Irish International Graeme McDowell (World University Champion) teamed up with Welsh International Kyron Sullivan against the US pairing of Klauk and Wisler.� This was a very tight match with neither side going more than 1 up until McDowell had two birdie 3�s on 17 & 18 to win the match by 2 holes.

Therefore, Great Britain & Ireland took a 2.5 � 1.5 lead over USA into the afternoon foursome matches.

In the afternoon the USA came out firing winning the first two matches comfortably 5 & 3 and 5 & 4.� Miller kept his form from the morning session and partnered Sanders to a 5 & 3 victory over Harris & Elson.� It wasn�t to be Booker & Hendry�s day as they suffered another heavy defeat from Cassini & Byrd.� However, GB & I won the third foursomes by 2 holes.� Again McDowell hit a birdie putt on 18 to win the match.� Rowe and Sullivan in the final foursomes were determined not to let the match slip and won the match 3 & 1.� Therefore levelling the foursomes 2 all, but giving Great Britain and Ireland an over night lead of 4.5-3.5.
