RULES OF GOLF
INTERCLUB QUIZ ENTERS SIXTH YEAR
The
Rules of Golf Inter-Club Quiz will be held again this year, sponsored
by the Royal & SunAlliance plc and supported by the Royal &
Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
The
Inter-Club Quiz, which tests club golfers' knowledge of the Rules
of Golf, has proved very popular over the last six years, with a
record entry of 426 clubs last year. The previous winners have been
Broadway (1995), Wilpshire (1996 and 1997), Braehead (1998) and
Stone in 1999.
As
in previous years, the Quiz is staged on a knock-out basis between
Clubs starting in April, leading to County Finals in September and
then Regional Finals in October. The six teams winning the regional
finals will travel to St Andrews for the Great Britain & Ireland
Final on 19 November in the Clubhouse of the R&A. For the second
time only the Quiz will be open to clubs in Ireland.
The
Quiz questions, which number in thousands, have been prepared by
the Secretary of the R&A's Rule Committee, David Rickman and
his team. They vary in difficulty with straightforward questions
being addressed to individuals and more probing questions based
on the "Decisions of the Rules of Golf" publication, addressed
to teams as a whole.
The
Quiz this year will be offering a number of prizes, courtesy of
Royal & SunAlliance, the R&A and Titleist & FootJoy.
The overall winners will each receive a season ticket to the Open
Championship in the following year. Titleist are donating over 5,000
Titleist PTS Wound golf balls, with each member of the County winning
teams receiving a dozen and the runners-up will also be rewarded
for their efforts with a sleeve of 3 balls for each team member.
Members of the regional winning teams will receive a pair of FootJoy
shoes.
The
Final will be held in the famous Big Room in the R&A Clubhouse
and the finalists will dine that evening in the Club's private dining
room. Overnight accommodation at the Old Course Hotel will be provided.
