PINEHURST
JOINS WORLD SHOTGUN 2000
Pinehurst, the
prestigious golf resort in North Carolina, is the latest to register
for the World Shotgun 2000. Golfers on all eight golf courses at
Pinehurst will be taking part in the event on 24 June 2000 by striking
a ball at the same time as thousands of golfers at courses in countries
around the world.
We are enormously
enthusiastic about joining in this prestigious event and, once again,
linking up with St Andrews, the Home of Golf. To celebrate six centuries
of golf in this way is a marvellous idea and the event should benefit
golf throughout the world. Pinehurst just had to be part of it,
said Don Padgett, Director of Golf at Pinehurst.
Pinehurst No.
2 was the venue for the US Open in 1999 won by Payne Stewart. The
Ryder Cup and the PGA Professional Championship have also been held
there as have many other top tournaments. The resorts links with
Scotland began nearly 100 years ago when Pinehurst No 1 was redesigned
by a native Scot, Donald Ross. He went on to create Pinehurst Nos
2,3 and 4 and today there are eight courses No. 8 was opened in
1996.
Other American
courses joining with Pinehurst are Barton Creek in Texas, Daufuskie
Island, South Carolina and The Homestead in Virginia. Support has
come in from the USGA and the PGA of America while Golf Digest is
actively backing the event. Clubs
wishing to register should telephone St Andrews Links Trust on 01334
