Women On Top
England won the Women's Amateur Home Internationals for the eighth
time in nine years at Royal St David's, Harlech when they beat Wales
5-4 in their final match. Ireland overcame Scotland by the same
margin to leave the Scots with the
wooden spoon for the second consecutive year.
It was left
to Waterlooville's Kerry Smith to secure the point that gave
England the title. She beat Anna Highgate 2&1 after knocking
in the crucial
putt on the 17th green.
But there was
plenty for Wales to smile about, in particular the 4&2 success
by Welsh champion Kathryn Evans over European title holder Emma
Duggleby.
*England's bid to win an eighth successive men's amateur home international
title came a spectacular cropper at Carnoustie when a final day
defeat by
Ireland consigned them to the wooden spoon and left host nation
with their
first triumph since 1986.
