NEW
ZEALAND RETAIN SCHOOL TEAM TITLE
Teams
from France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand
and South Africa joined teams from the four Home Nations at The
Berkshire on 14th and 15th May to compete
in the final of the Golf Foundations International School Team
Championship. The teams of three had qualified for the 36-hole event
having won their own national competitions.
At
the end of day one New Zealand held a 5 shot lead over Australia,
with England the best placed Home Nation a further 17 shots behind.
On the final day the Australians applied themselves to the task
of wrestling the trophy from New Zealand, the holders, with great
determination. However, the Kiwis held their nerve to return scores
of 67, 72 and 75 giving them a 4 shot victory. France finished in
third place 8 shots ahead of England. Ireland, Scotland and Wales
finished 7th, 9th and 10th respectively.
R&A
Captain, John Uzielli, attended to present the R&A Trophy to
the winning team and said, "There was a lot of excellent golf, particularly
from the winners, but I was especially impressed by the good sportsmanship
and camaraderie displayed by all the players."
Sam
Hunt, reigning New Zealand Amateur Champion, retained the PGA European
Tour Trophy for the best individual score after carding two sub-par
rounds (71, 67) to finish six under.
The
event began in 1972 with just 112 schools taking part. In this years
event 2,000 schools from around the world participated.
