QUICK
THINKING SAVES SCHOOLS FINAL
Thanks to the
quick thinking of the event organisers, the determination of the
players, and the co-operation of the staff at Newport Golf Club,
the Welsh Final of the Golf Foundation Schools Team Championship
was able to proceed.
The plan was
to allow the players to practice on the course the day before the
final. However, the forecast of atrocious weather conditions meant
that the final was likely to be a washout. Following discussions
with all concerned it was agreed that the players would forego their
practice round to play the final on the practice day.
All the players
coped well with the difficult conditions but it was Nicholas Davies,
Owen Rees and Huw Priestland from Amman Valley School who emerged
victorious. The school of Emrys Ap Iwan finished second, Monmouth
School were third and Blaengwawr Comprehensive School came fourth.
Adam Runcie, aged 12 from Emrys Ap Iwan, returned a great score
of 80, but the individual prize went to Nicholas Davies who finished
on 78.
As for the original
date for the final the course was closed due to the weather!
