Leads US Amateur
With a seven under par 63, Robert Godfrey of South Carolina, broke the US Amateur
record at the first day of qualifying at East Lake Country Club, Atlanta. He also
equalled Vijay Singh's course record, despite
bogeying the final two holes.
His round consisted of three
consecutive birdies at the start. Godfrey has failed to qualify in four previous
attempts.
Qualifying completes tomorrow
(Tuesday) with the lowest 64 our of a field of 312 going forward to the match
play part of the event. The 36 qualifying holes are played over East Lake (par
70, 7091 yards) and Druid Hills (par 72, 6561 yards) golf clubs.
77 of the players competing
in the qualifying event have achieved par or under today, although only 21 played
at East Lake, deemed to be a mcuh more difficult course.
Shooting 8 under par, 64
at Druid Hills was twenty-one year old Lucas Glover, also of South Carolina.
Also competing for a place
was Ty Tryon, the 17 year old high school junior who intends to turn pro after
the event. He did not have such a good day and recorded a 10 over par 80 on East
Lake, after hitting two double bogeys on the front nine.
