Former US Amateur title holder Jeff Quinney, eliminated Chez Reavie, the US Amateur Public Links Champion, in the first round Matchplay with a final score of 4 and 3.

This is the second time Quinney has beaten his friend and opponent Reavie, he defeated him 1 up in the Sun Devil Cup, which pits upper-classmen against freshmen.

At the beginning of the round Quinney pulled ahead, gaining a par on the third hole, and by the 8th was 2 up, as Reavie watched from the fairway bunker.

By the 11th Quinney was 4 up, as Reavie repeatedly visited all of the hazards around the course. However, at the 13th Reavie managed to win the hole, as Quinney struggled to leave the rough.

Holes 14 and 15 were tense as Quinney, battling nerves played more and more erratically. Twice his ball came to rest on pine straw amongst trees, whilst Reavie's found the fairway. But both times Quinney somehow managed to recover himself and his next shots both landed on the green. Quinney took the match at the 15th when Reavie missed a 2-foot putt.

James Driscoll and Nick Cassini, both US Walker Cup players, won their matches against Jay Childs and Ben Portie respectively. Driscoll's match ended in a two hole playoff as the game went all square and Cassini finished a 4 and 3 winner.

Meanwhile the GB&I Walker Cup players didn't fare so well; Jamie Elson was the only one to go forward; Graeme McDowell lost his match 3 and 2 and Richad McEvoy finished 1 down.
