Amateur Championship
Quinney Out
After reaching the quarter
finals, the defending champion, Jeff Quinney, was eliminated from the 101st US
Amateur by Brian Nosler, 1 up.
Quinney finished the first
nine holes 1 up, despite his accuracy having been left in the changing rooms.
At the 13th Nosler scored par whilst Quinney's birdie again seemed to be more
down to luck than accuracy. At the 14th Quinney pulled himself together and managed
to go 2 up.
At the 15th Nosler's 60
foot chip landed a foot short of the hole whilst Quinney's failed to putt out
yet again. By the 17th, tension was mounting, both found the green in two shots
and had putts less than 3 yards. Again Quinney's putting failed him and Nosler's
five-footer brought him all square.
The atmosphere continued
to grow as they reached the 18th, Nosler's tee shot took him within 25 feet of
the hole. Again Quinney's luck failed and with a drive fading to the right, he
was forced to take another shot to land within 4 feet from the hole.
The hole ended with Quinney's
4 foot putt lipping out, leaving Nosler to sink his 3 foot downhill putt with
comparative ease.
Nosler will now go forward
to the semi-final to take on Bubba Dickerson after he beat Michael Sims 1 up.
Robert Hamilton beat Daniel
Summerhays 4 and 3 and will take on Columbian, Manuel Merizalde who beat the Japanese
player, Taichiro Kyota 6 and 5.
