US
Amateur Championship
Semi Final
Dickerson and Hamilton,
will both advance to the final of the 101st US amateur Championship at East Lake
Golf Club, Atlanta.
The round was filled with
controversy after Nosler conceded 1 foot putt to Dickerson and then put his ball
within 1 foot. Dickerson progressed to the next tee, without telling Nosler to
pick his ball up. Assuming he had conceded Nosler was about to do just that when
he thought better of it and left the ball in position. Officials were called in
and and Dickerson was asked whether he had conceded the putt. Dickerson answered
in the negative and asked whether Nosler had picket up his ball. This seemed to
create bad feeling with Nosler who then refused to concede a two inch putt to
Dickerson on the next hole.
By the 16th Dickerson was
1 down when he managed an 8 foot chip to even the match. At the 17th a 45 foot
putt brought him 1 up.
Dickerson defeated Nosler,
1 up on the final hole, after a fantastic 8 foot putt.
Robert Hamilton beat Manuel
Merizalde 2 and 1.
Hamilton had been 1 down
as they approached the 10th. He managed to come back on the 12th, after Merizalde's
shot coming from the deep rough landed in a bunker. Hamilton himself in the intermediate
rough squared the match with a par.
He did the same on the next
three holes. At the 16th, Merizalde got the square to 2 down. At the final hole,
Merizalde conceded when Hamilton's putt ended within 15 feet of the cup.
Both Dickerson and Hamilton
not only win places in the final of the US Amateur but also invitations to the
2002 Masters.
