US
Amateur Championship
Bubba Wins!
As well as holding the Western
Amateur title, 20 year old Bubba Dickerson now also holds the title of US Amateur
Champion - a feat last achieved by Tiger Woods. Defeating Robert Hamilton 1 up
on the 36th hole, Dickerson will be listed alongside previous winners such as
Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Bobby Jones.
It was a tough day for both
players, there were numerous errors, birdies and bogeys galore. At the end of
the first round Hamilton was winning 1 up, although Dickerson's victories on the
final four holes prevented it from being 5 up.
At the 17th hole of the
second round, Dickerson squared the match to come back from a 1down deficit. Dickerson's
tee shot on the 18th, par 3, 230 yard hole landed within 12 feet of the cup; Hamilton's
in the left bunker. Hamilton escaped the bunker to finish in the heavy rough before
the green and took another two strokes to reach it. Dickerson's 20 foot putt sealed
his victory.
Dickerson's victory means
as well as a place in next year's Masters he has won exemptions for the US and
British Opens for 2002 and a 10 year exemption for the US Amateur.
