WITH
only 10 places available, the scramble for Walker Cup places will
become razor-keen in the coming weeks.
Irishman
Michael Hoey, the Amateur champion, Scot Steven O'Hara, winner of
the St Andrews Links Trophy, and Englishmen Luke Donald and Gary
Wolstenholme appear to be certainties to face the Americans at Ocean
Forest in Georgia on Aug 11 and 12.
Hoey
proved his battling qualities in the Amateur Championship at Prestwick
when a 30-foot putt saved him from going three down with three to
play in his semi-final against Scot Simon Mackenzie. He went on
to win at the 25th hole.
The
final chance for players to impress the Walker Cup selectors will
come in the European Men's Team Championship in Sweden early next
month, and the side will be chosen immediately after that event.
