Career for Williams

CRAIG WILLIAMS,
who won the Welsh Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl on Saturday, has finally
decided to turn professional after two years of hesitation.
Williams,
23, from Creigiau, west of Cardiff, has twice narrowly missed out on a Walker
Cup place and will compete in the Wales Open at Celtic Manor this week as an invited
amateur.
Then he will
head for Denmark and the European Individual Championship, in which he once collected
a silver medal. After that the home internationals take place at Woodhall Spa,
and he then intends to go to the European Tour Qualifying School to seek his card.
Williams lifted
the Welsh title in wind and rain with a tense victory on the last green in the
36-hole final over Lee Harpin, from the North Wales club at Llandudno. Harpin
twice recovered from a three-hole deficit to square the match, but when he three-putted
the final green it was all over and Williams, a former Welsh Open Stroke Play
champion, had filled in a missing piece of his career jigsaw.
